northaunt is hærleif langås, trondheim, norway
'northaunt' is the alter ego under which the norwegian haerleif langås composes dark ambient and soundscape based music. ‘northaunt’ launched in 1996 and released three major albums as well as various minor productions. he also had some side projects. 'northaunt' typically uses field recordings and transforms them into drones, rhythmical structures and tonal elements. usually he adds a melodic element to his tracks, which would stem from piano, guitar or any other source he finds suitable. the melodic element remains reduced to a minimum, though.
by using the language of nature and the occasional human element in the form of speech samples and pure crisp texture ‘northaunt’ tries to create landscapes from music. they may be mental or external ones, but they always float on the verge of night.
working with xabec's music, haerleif used the given sounds as raw material. he transformed the sounds by the means of computer software but did not add anything of his own. the new track was created by the use of the dynamics and the harmonic character of the original sounds, solely.
